What’s on it

The 11 federal holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103 are printed in red, each on its date and, when it falls on a weekend, again on the weekday federal employees get off. The observances are printed in grey because they aren’t days off: Valentine’s Day, the start and end of daylight saving time, St. Patrick’s Day, Tax Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, plus Election Day in even years. The page shows the current year until September, then the next one.

How the moving dates are set

Most holidays are tied to a weekday rather than a date. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day and Columbus Day to Mondays from 1971; Martin Luther King Jr. Day joined them as the third Monday in January, first observed in 1986. Thanksgiving has been the fourth Thursday of November since a 1941 law. Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May (proclaimed in 1914) and Father’s Day the third Sunday in June (made permanent in 1972). Tax Day is April 15, moved to the next business day when that is a weekend or a holiday, including Emancipation Day in Washington, DC, on April 16.

Who closes on which day

The table below goes through every day on the calendar and says who is closed. Federal offices close on the 11 federal holidays, on the Friday before when one falls on a Saturday and on the Monday after a Sunday one (OPM). The Federal Reserve Banks, which settle most bank transfers and direct deposits, and the Postal Service close on the same holidays but don’t move a Saturday one: in 2026 post offices opened as usual on Friday 3 July, the day federal offices took off for Independence Day. The New York Stock Exchange keeps its own list, published each year: it closes on Good Friday, trades on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and closes at 1 p.m. on the day after Thanksgiving and on 3 July and 24 December when they fall on a Monday to Thursday. Your own bank branch sets its hours, so check it before a deadline.

Adding what isn’t printed

State holidays, such as Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts or Cesar Chavez Day in California, aren’t on the calendar, and neither are religious holidays beyond Easter and Christmas. Tick Fillable PDF and type them into the day boxes, or write them in after printing. Paydays that shift around holidays are easier on the pay period calendar, a one-page overview is on the yearly calendar, and the calendar maker prints any other range with the same holiday options.

Who's closed, 2027

Every holiday and observance on the calendar, with the stock market's early closes. "Closed" with a date means the closure moves to that weekday; "Open" with a date means the institution doesn't move a weekend holiday.
