What this page sets up
The calendar opens on January to December with the England and Wales bank holidays switched on, on A4 paper with weeks that start on Monday, the way UK diaries are printed. From September it moves on to the next year, which is when most people start looking for one. Everything else is yours to change: the start month, how many months go on a page, a notes column, the colour.
The eight bank holidays
England and Wales share one list: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday (the first Monday in May), the spring bank holiday (the last Monday in May), the summer bank holiday (the last Monday in August), Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Good Friday and Easter Monday move with Easter, so they can land anywhere from late March to late April. The table below lists this year’s dates, worked out with the same rules as the calendar and checked against the list gov.uk publishes.
Royal proclamations can move a bank holiday or add a one-off day. That is how the spring bank holiday moved to Thursday 2 June 2022, next to the Platinum Jubilee holiday on the Friday, and how Monday 8 May 2023 became a bank holiday for the coronation.
Substitute days
When a bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the next weekday that isn’t already a holiday becomes the day off. The calendar prints both: the holiday’s name on its real date, and “(substitute day)” on the weekday that is actually off. In the default colours, red dates are days off and a grey label marks a holiday that falls on a weekend.
Scotland and Northern Ireland are different
Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew’s Day but no Easter Monday, and its summer bank holiday is at the start of August. Northern Ireland adds St Patrick’s Day and the Battle of the Boyne on 12 July. For Jersey and Guernsey, with Liberation Day, see the Channel Islands calendar. Open the Scotland calendar or the Northern Ireland calendar, or change the UK region under Holidays. For a September-to-August school year there’s the UK academic year calendar, and any other range starts from the calendar maker.
