Scotland’s bank holidays

Scotland normally has nine: New Year’s Day and 2 January, Good Friday, the first and the last Monday in May, the first Monday in August for the summer holiday (England’s comes at the end of the month), St Andrew’s Day on 30 November, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. There’s no Easter Monday.

A bank holiday isn’t always a day off

A Scottish bank holiday doesn’t oblige anyone to close or to give staff the day off. Many employers follow local holidays instead, which councils set and which differ between areas. Edinburgh’s list, for example, includes Easter Monday, a spring holiday in April, Victoria Day in May and a public holiday in September, none of them a national bank holiday. Find your council’s list and add those days to the calendar yourself.

St Andrew’s Day and New Year

St Andrew’s Day became a bank holiday under the St Andrew’s Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007. When 30 November is a Saturday or Sunday, the Monday after it is the holiday. New Year gets two days, 1 and 2 January, and a weekend moves either one to the next free weekday: 2 January 2027 is a Saturday, so Monday 4 January is the day off, and the calendar marks both dates.
