The ten public holidays
The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 lists nine in its Second Schedule: New Year’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Easter Monday, the first Mondays in May, June and August, the last Monday in October, Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day. The tenth, St Brigid’s Day, was added by S.I. No. 50 of 2022 and first taken on Monday 6 February 2023. The calendar prints each one in red on its date, on A4 with weeks starting on Monday, and shows January to December, moving on to the next year in September.
Weekends and days in lieu
Unlike the UK, Ireland has no substitute weekday when a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday: the holiday stays on the weekend. Workers still get the benefit, chosen by the employer from a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day’s pay; the Workplace Relations Commission points out there is no right to the next working day off. The calendar prints a weekend holiday in grey on its date, and marks the next free weekday, also in grey, as the usual day in lieu: the day most employers give and banks close. It isn’t a public holiday in law, so check your contract or ask your employer how your day will be given.
Good Friday, banks and schools
Good Friday isn’t a public holiday, but it behaves like one in places: banks close, and the Department of Education’s standardised Easter break includes it, so schools are shut. Banks follow their own list, published by the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland: a weekend holiday moves to the next weekday, and they close for the first three weekdays from Christmas Day, which in 2027 are Monday 27, Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 December.
Other calendars
Northern Ireland has its own calendar with UK bank holidays, and the England and Wales and Scotland calendars cover Great Britain. For a September start that suits the school year, change the start month or open the UK academic year calendar and tick Ireland public holidays in place of the UK ones. Any other layout starts from the calendar maker.
