Alberta’s general holidays
Nine days are general holidays under the Employment Standards Code. Four are fixed dates: 1 January, 1 July, 11 November and 25 December. Five move: Good Friday with Easter, Alberta Family Day (third Monday in February), Victoria Day (the Monday before 25 May), Labour Day (first Monday in September) and Thanksgiving (second Monday in October). They print in red on the 2027 calendar, and from September the page opens on the following year; the table below the text adds the optional days.
The four optional days
Alberta names Easter Monday, Heritage Day on the first Monday of August, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on 30 September, and Boxing Day as holidays an employer may give but doesn’t have to. That’s why Boxing Day is a day off in Ontario but a working day for many Albertans, and why schools, banks and government offices close on some of them while shops stay open. The calendar prints them grey so you can see them without mistaking them for general holidays; the table marks them “Optional: the employer decides”.
Pay and eligibility
To qualify for general holiday pay an employee needs 30 days of work with the employer in the previous 12 months, and must work their scheduled shifts before and after the holiday unless excused. Holiday pay depends on whether the day is one they’d normally work. The rules are on alberta.ca, which also publishes each year’s dates; the calendar’s red days match its list for 2026 to 2028.
Other calendars
Federally regulated workplaces in Alberta follow the Canada calendar; neighbouring British Columbia has its own page. The calendar maker does any other range.
