Quebec’s eight holidays

Section 60 of the Act respecting labour standards and the Fête nationale Act give New Year’s Day, Good Friday or Easter Monday, National Patriots’ Day on the Monday before 25 May, the Fête nationale on 24 June, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving (Action de grâces) on the second Monday of October and Christmas Day. The calendar prints in French, from janvier to décembre with lundi first, as Quebec calendars usually do, and names each holiday as the CNESST does; the table under this text gives the English and French names side by side. Switch Calendar language to English for an English calendar. The page moves on to the next year in September.

Fewer, but different

Eight is fewer than most provinces: there’s no Family Day in February, no civic holiday in August and no Boxing Day. Quebec is also the only province that turns Victoria Day into a national day of its own, and it makes Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, the Fête nationale, the province’s biggest holiday; a week later, 1 July doubles as Quebec’s moving day, when many leases end. Canada Day on a Sunday moves to 2 July for everyone.

Pay rules in brief

A statutory holiday gives an indemnity equal to one twentieth of the wages earned in the four complete weeks of pay before the week of the holiday, whether or not the employee works that day; working it earns a compensatory day off or the indemnity on top of the wage. The CNESST explains the details. The Fête nationale has its own rules under the Fête nationale Act, including the Sunday case above.

Other calendars

Federally regulated workplaces in Quebec, such as banks and airlines, follow the Canada calendar, and Ontario has its own page. The calendar maker does any other range.
