5e Character Sheet: Fill It In, Let It Do the Math, Print It

Type your scores and pick a class: modifiers, saves, skills, AC, hit points and spell slots fill themselves in. Print it filled or blank.

Character

Level 1 · proficiency +2

Picking a class sets its saving throws; picking an SRD background ticks its two skills; picking a race or species sets your speed. Add the ability increases from your race, species or background to the scores yourself.

How to fill in the character sheet

  1. Pick the rules. Choose the 2014 rules (SRD 5.1) or the 2024 rules (SRD 5.2.1), whichever your table plays. Most numbers come out the same; the differences are listed below.
  2. Choose a class and level. Your first class sets your saving throw proficiencies and your hit dice. Playing a multiclass character? Add up to two more classes; the proficiency bonus uses your total level.
  3. Enter your ability scores. Type the six scores, or press Use the standard array for this class to place 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8 where the SRD suggests for that class. Then add the increases your race, species or background gives. Each modifier appears next to its score.
  4. Mark your skills. Tap a skill’s circle once for proficiency and again for expertise. Choosing one of the SRD backgrounds (Acolyte, Criminal, Sage or Soldier) ticks its two skills for you.
  5. Add armor, attacks and gear. Pick armor from the list and tick Shield; Armor Class follows the SRD armor table. Each attack shows its bonus to hit and its damage once you choose the ability it uses.
  6. Print or save. Download PDF gives you two pages on US Letter or A4. Your character also stays saved in this browser, and Export JSON makes a file you can import on another device.

What the sheet works out

Everything a new player usually gets wrong on paper. Each ability modifier is the score minus 10, halved and rounded down, so 15 gives +2 and 8 gives −1. Your proficiency bonus is +2 at levels 1 to 4 and goes up by one every four levels, to +6 at 17. A saving throw or skill you are proficient in adds that bonus to the modifier; expertise adds it twice. Passive Perception is 10 plus your Perception bonus.

Armor Class uses the armor’s base value: light armor adds your full Dexterity modifier, medium armor at most +2, heavy armor none, and a shield adds 2. Without armor, a barbarian adds Constitution and a monk adds Wisdom (only without a shield), whichever gives the higher number. The sheet warns you when heavy armor needs more Strength than you have, or gives disadvantage on Stealth.

Hit points use the fixed values from the class descriptions: your first class’s full hit die at level 1, then half the die plus one for each further level, with your Constitution modifier added every level. If your group rolls for hit points, type your own maximum. The −1, −5, +1 and +5 buttons track damage at the table, taking temporary hit points first.

Spell slots come from the class tables. Bards, clerics, druids, sorcerers and wizards use the full-caster table; paladins and rangers use half their level, rounded up. With two or more spellcasting classes the sheet uses the Multiclass Spellcaster table, and a warlock’s Pact Magic slots are listed separately because they come back on a short rest. Tick a slot when you spend it; Long rest clears them. The multiclass spell slots example walks through the counting.

2014 or 2024 rules: what changes on the sheet

  • Paladins and rangers have no spell slots at level 1 under the 2014 rules and two under the 2024 rules.
  • Multiclassing: half your paladin and ranger levels count toward your spellcaster level, rounded down in 2014 and rounded up in 2024.
  • Jack of All Trades (bard, level 2) adds half your proficiency bonus to any ability check in 2014, initiative included; in 2024 it applies only to skill checks you aren’t proficient in, so initiative doesn’t get it.
  • Long rests give back half your hit dice in 2014 and all of them in 2024.
  • The race and background suggestions follow each SRD: nine races in 5.1, nine species (with the goliath’s 35-foot speed) and four backgrounds in 5.2.1.

At the table

On a phone the sheet stacks into one column, in the order you fill it in: character details, abilities, skills, combat, attacks and spells. During a session the hit point line and the −5, −1, +1 and +5 buttons in Combat are all you need to track damage. Roll with the dice roller, or start a new character with 4d6 drop the lowest for ability scores and type the six results in. For dungeon maps, print hex paper or square graph paper.

A shared link carries the build only: rules, classes, levels, scores, proficiencies, armor, speed and the name. Gear, spells and notes never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded and there is no account.

About the rules content

This is an independent, 5E compatible sheet. All rules data comes from the System Reference Documents 5.1 and 5.2.1, which are free to use under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence; the attribution they require is printed under the sheet and on page 2 of every PDF. Classes, races, species and backgrounds that aren’t in the SRD aren’t listed, but you can type any name you like.
