South Australia’s holidays

Since 1 January 2024 the Public Holidays Act 2023 has set South Australia’s list: New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Adelaide Cup Day on the second Monday in March, Good Friday, the day after Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, the King’s Birthday on the second Monday in June, Labour Day on the first Monday in October, Christmas Day and the Proclamation Day holiday on 26 December. They print in red on A4 paper, with each week starting on a Monday, and the table below gives the 2027 dates. In September the page moves on to the next year.

Weekend rules and part-days

The 2023 Act made Easter Sunday a holiday and wrote the weekend rules out in full. A New Year’s Day or Christmas Day on a weekend keeps its date and adds the following Monday. Australia Day on a weekend moves to the Monday instead. Proclamation Day adds the Monday when it falls on a Saturday and the Tuesday when it falls on a Sunday or Monday, which is why Christmas 2027 gives South Australians Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. Anzac Day has no substitute. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are public holidays from 7pm to midnight, marked grey, whichever day of the week they fall on.

Days the Governor can add

Under sections 3 and 5 of the Act the Governor can move a holiday by proclamation, or add a day or part-day for the whole state or for one district only.
