Tasmania’s holidays

The Statutory Holidays Act 2000 gives every Tasmanian New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Eight Hours Day on the second Monday in March, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, the King’s Birthday on the second Monday in June, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Those print in red, on A4 with Monday-first weeks. The table under this text lists 2027, and the page moves on to the next year in September.

North and south

Tasmania is the state where your holidays depend on where you work. Schedule 1 of the Act gives the south the Royal Hobart Regatta in February and the rest of the state Recreation Day in November, so every Tasmanian gets one of the two. Show days follow municipal boundaries: the Royal Launceston Show for Launceston and the surrounding councils, the Royal Hobart Show for the south, and smaller shows for Burnie, Devonport, King Island, Flinders Island and Agfest for Circular Head. The calendar prints all of them in grey, each labelled with its area, so you can see which one is yours.

Weekend rules

Tasmania moves holidays rather than adding them. A New Year’s Day or Boxing Day on a weekend becomes a weekday holiday instead, and Australia Day moves to the Monday. Christmas Day stays on the 25th and a weekend Christmas adds a weekday. So New Year’s Day 2028, a Saturday, is kept on Monday 3 January, and Christmas 2027 gives Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. Anzac Day is never moved.
