What this page sets up
The ten months of a Canadian school year, September to June, one month to a page with a ruled column on the right for PA days, parent-teacher interviews, report card dates and exam weeks. July and August are left off; set Number of months to 12 to add them. In June the page moves on to the coming school year.
The red days it opens with are a starting point, not a school calendar. They are Canada’s federal statutory holidays, from Labour Day to Victoria Day, listed in the table under this text, and they include Remembrance Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, neither of which is on Ontario’s list of school holidays.
School holidays for Ontario
Under Holidays, Province or territory has a School holidays group with Ontario schools (Regulation 304). Choose it and the red days become Ontario’s school holidays for 2026-2027: Labour Day, Thanksgiving, the Christmas break (Monday 21 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027), Family Day, the March break (Monday 15 to Friday 19 March 2027), Good Friday, Easter Monday and Victoria Day, with each break’s weekdays in red and listed as one line under the preview. Remembrance Day and 30 September drop off, since neither is a school holiday, and Ontario Day (Tuesday 1 June 2027) is marked in grey as the school day it is. These are the regulation’s default dates, which the Ministry of Education’s published key dates follow for every school year from 2023-24 to 2029-30; a board with other approved dates, or a PA day to add, still needs its own calendar.
For the other provinces the picker offers statutory holidays under each province’s employment standards law, which are not the same as school holidays. Ontario’s own statutory list shows why: it includes Boxing Day and leaves out Easter Monday, the opposite of its school list. Outside Ontario, write the breaks in from your board’s calendar.
How each province sets the school year
There is no national school calendar. Education belongs to the provinces, and the boards set the actual dates within each province’s rules. Some of those rules, as the regulations stood in September 2026:
- Ontario: Regulation 304 puts the school year between 1 September and 30 June, with at least 194 school days, 3 of them professional activity days plus up to 4 more. Its school holidays are Labour Day, Thanksgiving, a 14-day Christmas vacation (Monday 21 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 this year, by the default rule), Family Day, a five-day March break starting on the Monday after the Friday before 14 March (Monday 15 to Friday 19 March 2027 this year), Good Friday, Easter Monday and Victoria Day. When 14 March is itself a Friday, the March break is the week before: 10 to 14 March in 2025, as the Ministry’s key dates show. A board can also have another week approved. Since 2025 every Ontario school calendar must also mark Ontario Day on 1 June, or the Friday before when it falls on a weekend: Tuesday 1 June 2027 this year. It isn’t a holiday: the Ministry says it remains an instructional day, and it can’t be a PA day or an exam day. A board can get the Minister’s approval for different dates, so check yours.
- Quebec: the Basic school regulation gives each student a calendar of at most 200 days, at least 180 of which are days of educational services; the others are pedagogical days (journées pédagogiques), when teachers work but students get no classes. As the Ministry of Education explained in 2026, the rule is the equivalent of 180 days: elementary and secondary students must get at least 25 hours a week, and most schools teach 5 hours a day for 180 days.
- British Columbia: the School Calendar Regulation counts hours rather than days: at least 853 hours of instruction for kindergarten, 878 for grades 1 to 7 and 952 for grades 8 to 12. Each board’s calendar must list its days in session, vacations, statutory holidays and non-instructional days.
Filling in your board’s year
Start from your board’s published calendar. The quickest route is the fillable PDF option, which lets you type “PA day”, “March break” or “Exams” straight into the right date before printing. Things that span weeks, such as a report card period or a sports season, go in the ruled column. A public and a Catholic board in the same city can set different PA days, so use the calendar of the board your school belongs to.
Other calendars
Families who also want a calendar-year planner can print the Canada calendar, or the Ontario or Quebec one with that province’s statutory holidays for January to December. Cross-border and international schools may need the August start of the US school year calendar or the September-to-August UK academic year. Any other span comes from the calendar maker.
