Set up for a UK school year

The calendar above starts in September and runs for 12 months to August, on A4 with Monday-first weeks and a lined notes column beside each month for the things a school year collects: INSET days, parents’ evenings, trips, mocks. The England and Wales bank holidays are marked; pick Scotland or Northern Ireland as the UK region under Holidays for theirs. The page shows the current school year until June and the next one from June on.

Adding your term dates

Term dates aren’t national. In England the local authority sets them for community and voluntary controlled schools, and academies, foundation and voluntary aided schools set their own, so two schools in the same town can break up on different days. In Scotland each local authority sets its own terms and holidays.

The quickest way to get them onto the calendar is to tick Fillable PDF, download, and type “Term starts”, “Half term” or “INSET” into the day boxes before you print. Or print it blank and write them in; Monday-first weeks mean every row is one school week, with the weekend at the end.

How long the school year is

• England: at least 380 sessions a year, a morning and an afternoon each counting as one, which makes 190 days.
• Wales: also 380 sessions, or 190 days. The Welsh Government describes the school year as running from September to July.
• Scotland: at least 190 days in three terms, usually from the second or third week of August to around the end of June.
• Northern Ireland: 200 days, up to ten of them planned closure days for staff training, in three terms from early September to the end of June.

Other calendars

For a January-to-December year with the same bank holidays, use the UK calendar; the Scotland and Northern Ireland versions carry their own. US schools, whose year starts in August, have a school year calendar with federal holidays. For any other range or paper size, start from the calendar maker.
