How the 4-5-4 calendar works

Every week runs Sunday to Saturday, and the year is 52 whole weeks, or 53. The National Retail Federation groups them into months of 4, 5 and 4 weeks, so each quarter is 13 weeks: February has 4 weeks, March 5, April 4, and the pattern repeats to January. A month always starts on a Sunday, which is why fiscal March can begin in the last days of February. The point is comparison: a fiscal month has the same number of each weekday every year, so this year’s March is compared with last year’s March, not with a month that had one Saturday more.

What this page sets up

The calendar above opens on fiscal 2027, one fiscal month per page, with the fiscal week number (1 to 52 or 53) beside each row and the first day of every calendar month labelled, so you can see where March actually begins. The table under this text gives each month’s weeks and dates. The page moves on to the next fiscal year in September, when planning for it starts. Choose 12 months per page for the whole fiscal year on one sheet.

Other retail calendars

Many companies use 4-4-5 or 5-4-4 months, or end their year in another month: the IRS allows a 52–53-week tax year that ends on the same weekday nearest the end of a month (Treasury Regulations 1.441-2). Choose the pattern under Months are and set Fiscal year starts in to your first month; the calendar starts the year on the Sunday nearest the 1st of that month. Years that end on the last Saturday of a month, rather than the nearest one, aren’t supported.

The federal government’s October-to-September year, which uses calendar months, is on the fiscal year calendar, and the calendar maker prints any other range.
