What this page sets up
One portrait sheet with the 12 months of the federal fiscal year, October to September, with the federal holidays marked on their dates and listed along the bottom. The months sit three to a row, so each row is a fiscal quarter: Q1 October to December, Q2 January to March, Q3 April to June, Q4 July to September. For a month per page with room to write, pick 1 month per page; for a wall planner, choose Tabloid or A3 paper.
The federal fiscal year
Under 31 U.S.C. 1102 the Treasury’s fiscal year begins on October 1 and ends on September 30 of the following year, and it takes the number of the year it ends in: fiscal year 2027 runs from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027. The page opens on the fiscal year in progress and moves to the next one in July, as budget work for it gets going.
Federal holidays in the fiscal year
Every fiscal year holds all 11 federal holidays, from Columbus Day in October to Labor Day in September. When one falls on a weekend, federal employees get the nearest weekday off: the Friday before a Saturday holiday, the Monday after a Sunday one. The table below lists this fiscal year’s dates. One-off closures, such as an extra day off at Christmas given by executive order, aren’t marked; write them in if one is announced.
State, school and company fiscal years
Most state governments run a different year. According to NASBO, 46 states start their fiscal year on July 1; New York starts on April 1, Texas on September 1, and Alabama and Michigan on October 1. School district finances mostly run July to June as well. To print one of these, change the start month and keep 12 months: the holidays and layout follow.
Companies pick their own fiscal years. This calendar handles any year that starts on the first of a month, but not a 52/53-week retail calendar whose quarters end on a fixed weekday. To plot paydays across the year, the pay period calendar lists every one from a single payday you enter; for an August-to-July year, use the school year calendar. Anything else starts from the calendar maker.
