Asr
First day of Ramadan

A day earlier isn't expected: the new moon is at 15:56 UTC on Saturday 6 February, too young to be seen by eye that evening.

More options: Imsak, clock, high latitudes, adjust to your mosque

Only used where the sun doesn't go far enough below the horizon for the method's Fajr or Isha angle, or where it would put them unreasonably deep into the night (far north or south). Times it changes are underlined.

Adjust to match your mosque (minutes)

Ramadan begins when the new crescent moon is sighted, or on the date your community's calendar sets, so it can start a day later in some countries and mosques. Choose the first day your mosque or moon-sighting committee announces. These times are calculated: check them against your local mosque's timetable.

Sehri and iftaar in Johannesburg

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027 by the Umm al-Qura calendar. On that day Johannesburg’s sehri ends at 04:25 and the fast is broken at 18:56: 14 h 31 m without food or drink. By the thirtieth day sehri ends at 04:48 and iftaar is at 18:31, so the fast lasts 13 h 43 m. The whole country keeps one clock, UTC+2, and never changes it for summer, so none of the times jump in the middle of the month.

Which method the table uses

The table starts with the Muslim World League angles, the tool’s default for South Africa: Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, Isha at 17°. Asr starts on the Shafi’i (standard) time. If your masjid follows the Hanafi school, switch Asr to Hanafi: only that column moves, about an hour later. If the Fajr or Isha on your masjid’s printed sheet is a few minutes off from this table, it was calculated with another angle: choose that method above, or add a minute offset to Fajr or Isha until the two agree.

Elsewhere in South Africa

Gauteng’s towns are close enough together that their times differ by a minute or two. The coast is another matter. Durban, further east, breaks the fast a few minutes before Johannesburg, while Cape Town, far to the west and south, has much later sunsets and longer fasts: see the Cape Town timetable for its times and why. For any other town, search for it at the top of the tool.

Take the table with you

Download the month as an A4 PDF for the kitchen wall or your masjid’s notice board, or add it to your phone’s calendar with alerts before sehri ends and at iftaar. Everything is worked out on your device from the city’s coordinates; nothing about you is sent anywhere.
