Estimates for planning. Textured or porous surfaces take more paint than a smooth, sealed wall.

Wattyl paints, set up

The paint calculator starts on Wattyl I.D Advanced Low Sheen. Its data sheet gives coverage per coat of up to 16 M2/L, and the tins are the ones on its product page, 1, 4, 10 and 15 litres, the largest in white only. The starting bedroom needs about 6 litres to do walls and ceiling twice: one 4 litre and three 1 litre tins.

The menu also has I.D Advanced Matt, the Ceiling Anti-mould paint, and Solagard Low Sheen and Matt for exteriors. Solagard Matt is sold from 4 litres up.

Ceilings cover less

The I.D Advanced ceiling paint is rated at up to 14 M2/L rather than 16. When the ceiling is done in a separate paint in the calculator, give it 14 so the ceiling line isn’t short.

Tinted colours matter for the tins too: the data sheet lists the 15 litre container for white only, so for a tinted wall colour untick the 15 litre size and the calculator plans in 1, 4 and 10 litre tins.

Hot weather and porous walls outside

For Solagard, Wattyl asks for a minimum of two coats, and suggests thinning the first coat with up to 10% water in hot or windy weather or on very porous surfaces. A very porous wall is also where the full rated figure is least likely, so plan those walls lower.
