Benjamin Moore by the gallon and quart
Regal Select Interior is the paint this page’s paint calculator starts with: 400 sq ft a gallon, the low end of the 400–450 range on its data sheet, bought in gallons and quarts. The Paint menu also holds Aura Interior, ben Interior, Waterborne Ceiling Paint and two exterior paints, Aura Exterior and Regal Select Exterior High Build. Change the paint and the spread rate and container sizes follow.
Enter the length, width and ceiling height of each room, and the result lists the gallons plus the mix of gallons and quarts with the least left over, for example two gallons and two quarts, with three gallons shown underneath as the option with fewer cans.
Spread rates and why they differ
Every Benjamin Moore data sheet opened for this page qualifies its spread rate with the same caveat: it depends on surface texture and porosity. That is why the calculator uses the lower number of each range. Aura is rated lower than Regal Select, at 350–400 sq ft a gallon, so on paper it needs more for the same room. Outside, Aura Exterior and Regal Select Exterior High Build are both rated 250–350 sq ft a gallon on their data sheets, a good deal less than the interior lines.
Coats and colour changes
Benjamin Moore recommends two coats for full colour development, two on bare surfaces and one or two over paint that is already there. For a big colour change, the Advance data sheet suggests tinting the primer to roughly the shade of the finish coat; tick Primer first to add a primer line.
