Valspar’s UK range, preloaded

Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings is loaded into this page’s paint calculator, at the 10 m² per litre that valsparpaint.co.uk gives for it, and its tins (1, 2.5 and 5 litres) become the can sizes. The other Valspar paints in the menu are Classic and Simplicity Walls & Ceilings, Premium Kitchen & Bathroom and, for outside walls, Premium Masonry. Valspar’s product pages send buyers to B&Q.

Because every Valspar paint here has the same coverage, switching between them changes only the tins on offer. That still matters: a room that needs 7 litres of Premium Walls & Ceilings is bought as one 5 litre and one 2.5 litre tin, while Premium Kitchen & Bathroom comes only in 2.5 litres, so the same walls take three tins of it.

One coat or two

Valspar’s own page calculator notes that its figures are for one coat, and its data sheets say to apply two. This calculator starts at two coats, which is why its answer can be about double the one on Valspar’s page for the same wall. Leave it at two unless you are refreshing the same colour over a sound wall, and add a third when you make a dramatic colour change, as the data sheets warn.

Measuring up

Measure every room along the floor and up to the ceiling, and count its doors and windows. If the ceiling stays white while the walls change colour, use the Ceiling in a different paint option to get two separate amounts.
