Sherwin-Williams, from quarts to 5-gallon pails
The paint calculator opens here on Emerald Interior. Sherwin-Williams rates it at 350–400 sq ft per gallon, and the calculator starts from 350; the containers on offer are the quart, gallon and 5-gallon sizes on its product page. Duration Home, SuperPaint and Cashmere share that coverage range, so switching between them mainly changes which containers you can buy: Cashmere and Premium Ceiling Paint come by the gallon and 5-gallon pail only.
Type each room’s size and the doors and windows, then look at the two suggestions: the least paint left over, and fewer containers. On a whole floor, a 5-gallon pail often beats a row of gallons.
Reading Sherwin-Williams coverage
Sherwin-Williams states coverage at a film thickness: 350–400 sq ft per gallon at 4 mils wet for Emerald. Put it on thicker and a gallon covers less. Its data sheets say priming and two coats help where hiding a previous colour or new drywall is a factor. The Premium Ceiling Paint page promises one-coat coverage, while its data sheet asks for two coats when it primes itself on an unpainted ceiling.
Outside the house
Switching to House exterior puts Duration Exterior in the picker, rated at 250 to 300 square feet a gallon, with Emerald Exterior as the other choice. Its data sheet calls for one coat on repaint work and two on bare surfaces, which can halve the order for a house in good condition.
