Dulux’s Australian range, ready to use

This paint calculator opens on Wash&Wear Low Sheen, from the Wash&Wear wall range on dulux.com.au. Its data sheet puts the theoretical spread rate at 16 m² per litre, and that figure is already in the coverage box. The can sizes are the ones the product page offers, from a 500 ml pot to a 15 litre pail. Pick Wash&Wear Matt, the +PLUS Super Hide version, Ceiling White or one of the Weathershield exterior paints in the Paint menu, and the figure and the tins switch over.

Measure each room in metres and count its openings. The answer is the litres, then the mix of Dulux tins that leaves the least paint behind; for the room already filled in, that is a 4 litre, a 2 litre and a 500 ml tin.

Why 16 is the optimistic end

A spread rate is worked out for a smooth, sealed surface and a film of the thickness the data sheet expects. Fresh plaster, patched walls and rough render soak up more. When a light colour goes over a dark one Dulux warns that more than two coats may be needed, so lower the box to 13 or 14 for a big colour change, or set Coats to 3.

Outside: bare masonry takes an extra coat

Pick House exterior to move the menu to Weathershield Low Sheen. On a repaint two coats are enough, but on bare brick, render, fibre cement or new timber its data sheet specifies three, which adds half again to the litres.
