Crown emulsions and Sandtex, ready to go

The paint calculator on this page starts with Crown Walls & Ceilings Matt Emulsion picked. Crown shows coverage per litre next to each tin size on its product pages rather than in a sentence, and for this paint it is 14 m² per litre, which is now in the coverage box. The tin sizes on offer are the 2.5 L and 5 L ones Crown lists, so the result tells you how many of each to buy, for example a 5 L plus a 2.5 L tin rather than a 10 L one Crown doesn’t list for it.

Type each room’s size, adjust the doors and windows, and pick a different Crown paint from the Paint menu at any time: the coverage and tins follow.

Two coats, as Crown advises

Crown’s own answers to common questions say most decorating projects will require two coats, and ask you to allow for that when working out quantities, so the calculator keeps Coats at 2. It also lists what changes the number: the surface you are painting, its condition, the colour you are covering and the colour you have chosen. A pale colour over a dark one is the usual reason to plan a third coat.

Masonry: smooth or textured

Painting render or brick? Choose House exterior, which moves the picker to Sandtex Microseal Smooth Masonry at 16 m² per litre. If you are buying the textured finish, pick Sandtex Microseal Textured Masonry instead: Crown lists it at 6 m² per litre, and it comes in 5 litre tins only, so the tin count rises quickly on a whole house.
