Canadian cans, measured in litres

The paint calculator opens on Dulux Lifemaster Interior. Its data sheet quotes 37 square metres, or 400 square feet, per 3.78 litre can, and the calculator divides that out to 9.8 m² per litre. The can sizes are the three dulux.ca uses: 946 ml (a quart), 3.78 L (a gallon) and 18.9 L (a five-gallon pail).

The bedroom already entered takes about 9.9 litres for two coats. The least-left-over answer is two 3.78 litre cans and three 946 ml cans. Underneath, the fewer-cans line offers three 3.78 litre cans: about 0.9 litres more paint, but three cans instead of five, and quarts cost more per litre.

Ranges, and what the low end means

Several of the Canadian data sheets give a range rather than one figure: 28 to 37 m² per 3.78 litres for Lifemaster Interior Ceiling, 23 to 37 for Diamond Exterior, 35 to 39 for Weatherguard Exterior. The low end is what goes in the box, as the cautious figure for textured or porous surfaces. On smooth drywall that is already painted, the top of the range is closer.

Primer and bare surfaces

Dulux Canada recommends two topcoats on all surfaces. On bare drywall or wood, its sheets add, the first of two coats serves as primer, so the two-coat figure covers that case too.
