Estimates for planning. Textured or porous surfaces take more paint than a smooth, sealed wall.

Dunn-Edwards figures in the calculator

Everest interior paint is the starting point of this paint calculator, set to 400 square feet a gallon, the bottom of the “approximately 400–475 sq. ft. per gallon” its data sheet gives as practical coverage per coat. That data sheet lists quart, gallon and five-gallon containers, and those are the can sizes. The pre-filled room needs 2.49 gallons for two coats over walls and ceiling, which comes to two gallons and two quarts, with three whole gallons as the alternative that needs fewer containers.

Suprema and Spartawall for walls, the Dead Flat Ceiling Paint, and Evershield and Spartashield for exteriors are in the Paint menu. Spartawall and the ceiling paint are packed in gallons and five-gallon pails only.

Practical coverage and your surface

Dunn-Edwards calls its figure practical coverage per coat at the recommended dry film thickness, and says it depends on surface conditions and application techniques. Stucco and block walls outside have far more surface per square foot of wall than smooth drywall. For rough stucco, try a lower figure such as 250 in the coverage box and compare the two results.

New surfaces take two coats

Where old paint is sound and repaired, one coat may be enough, the data sheets say; new work typically needs two. Keep Coats at 1 only when repainting over sound paint in a close color.
