Photowall recommends 6–10 cm (2.5–4 in) extra on the width and the height for walls that aren't straight. Graham & Brown print made-to-measure murals in 50 cm (19.6 in) strips; check your maker's strip width.

Batch numbers. Rolls printed together share a batch number on the label; rolls from different batches can differ slightly in colour. Buy every roll at once, check the numbers match before you cut, and keep the label.

An estimate for planning. Sloping ceilings, stairwells and walls out of square take more paper: ask your decorator to check before you order.

Sanderson’s rolls and a long half drop

The wallpaper calculator opens here on Sanderson’s standard 52 cm, 10.05 m roll with King’s Rose, whose 103.8 cm repeat is a half drop, and paste in Sanderson’s 5 kg ready-mixed tubs. Replace them with the usable width, vertical repeat and match of your own design, all listed in its product details.

Long half drops are where counting strips pays. On 2.4 m walls with 10 cm of trim, every King’s Rose cut must stop half a repeat beyond a whole one, at 2.6 m, and each roll gives three. Raise the walls to 2.6 m and the next valid cut is 3.63 m, two to a roll, so that bedroom rises from 10 rolls to 14, and from 2 tubs of paste to 3. Try other heights and follow the lengths-per-roll figure in the working.

Wide widths

Sanderson’s wide papers cover the same wall with fewer lengths. Delphiniums & Lilac is 68.6 cm across with a 95.1 cm straight repeat, and in the table the same room takes 22 lengths instead of 29, or 8 rolls. Pick Wide width in the roll menu for any of these. For paste, Sanderson counts four wide rolls to a tub against five standard ones, and the calculator switches rate when the roll is 60 cm or wider.
