Brewster’s bolt, counted length by length

The wallpaper calculator starts in feet on the 20.5 in × 33 ft Brewster bolt with Hip Grey Ogee, which Brewster lists at a 21 in straight repeat, in a 12 × 14 ft room with 9 ft ceilings. Each length is 9 ft plus 4 in, lengthened to six repeats, 126 in; a bolt gives three, the room needs 31 widths, so 11 bolts. Change the room and the design to yours; results are in bolts, which are double rolls.

Brewster’s own guide is a quick chart of bolts by room size, with the tip that one bolt covers about 6 ft of wall and that you subtract a bolt per four regular-size doors or windows. It’s a fast estimate that relies on offcuts being reused. Here the lengths are counted instead: how many widths go round the room, and how many of your ceiling height a 33 ft bolt really yields.

The comparison table puts Brewster’s chart beside the bolts counted strip by strip for the same bare rooms, with no design to line up, at Brewster’s 4 in of trim and at 3 in. On 8 ft walls, 4 in of trim leaves each bolt 4 in short of a fourth length, so the count runs two to five bolts above the chart; at 3 in the fourth length fits and most rooms land within a bolt or two of it. Trimming less only works on a straight ceiling and skirting, so measure before relying on it.
