Self-adhesive rolls are short, so what counts is how many full lengths each one yields: key in your wall and the repeat to see how many to order.

Match

The repeat and the match are on the roll label and the product page. Trim is the paper cut off at the ceiling and the skirting: Morris & Co allow 10 cm a drop, Brewster 4 in.

Photowall recommends 6–10 cm (2.5–4 in) extra on the width and the height for walls that aren't straight. Graham & Brown print made-to-measure murals in 50 cm (19.6 in) strips; check your maker's strip width.

Batch numbers. Rolls printed together share a batch number on the label; rolls from different batches can differ slightly in colour. Buy every roll at once, check the numbers match before you cut, and keep the label.

An estimate for planning. Sloping ceilings, stairwells and walls out of square take more paper: ask your decorator to check before you order.

Short rolls change the count

A self-adhesive roll is a fraction of the length of a pasted one: Tempaper’s are 20.5 in wide and 16.5 ft long, roughly 28 sq ft, against 33 ft for an American bolt and 10.05 m for a European roll. Square feet don’t decide how many you buy; complete panels do. On a normal 8 ft wall that is usually one panel per roll, so the number of rolls equals the number of panels across.

The wallpaper calculator is set here to a single 10 × 8 ft wall in Tempaper’s Cherry Bomb, listed with an 18 in straight repeat. Each panel is 100 in with overlap, raised to a whole number of repeats, 108 in. One fits per roll, the wall needs six, and the paste line stays off because the paper sticks by itself.

Getting a second panel out of a roll

The chart below shows how close this is: without a motif to align, two 8 ft panels need 200 in and the roll holds 198. If your ceiling is an inch or two lower, measure it and enter it, and if you’ll overlap by less than 4 in, change the trim. The working under the result tells you how many panels each roll yields, so you’ll see when it tips to two. With a window in the wall, the panels over the glass are shorter and often fit the spare lengths.
