Photowall recommends 6–10 cm (2.5–4 in) extra on the width and the height for walls that aren't straight. Graham & Brown print made-to-measure murals in 50 cm (19.6 in) strips; check your maker's strip width.

Batch numbers. Rolls printed together share a batch number on the label; rolls from different batches can differ slightly in colour. Buy every roll at once, check the numbers match before you cut, and keep the label.

An estimate for planning. Sloping ceilings, stairwells and walls out of square take more paper: ask your decorator to check before you order.

Farrow & Ball’s roll and paste

Arriving here sets the wallpaper calculator to Farrow & Ball’s 53 cm by 10 m roll, Bumble Bee’s 16 cm repeat and the brand’s own paste, good for five rolls a tube. Put in the repeat of your design instead: every product page gives it in centimetres and inches.

Since the roll is 10 m rather than 10.05, tall rooms lose a length a little sooner than with other brands. At 2.4 m with 10 cm of trim, a small repeat like Bumble Bee’s or Achard’s 7.6 cm cuts to about 2.5 m and still yields three per roll, not four: four at 2.56 m would need 10.24 m. A plain design with nothing to match, cut at exactly 2.5 m, just squeezes in four.

Reading the table

Three Farrow & Ball designs in the same bedroom. Atacama’s 62.3 cm repeat stretches every length to 3.12 m, yet at three per roll it still totals 10, like the small prints. Its repeat only bites in a tall room: past roughly 3 m of wall each cut becomes six repeats, 3.74 m, and only two fit per roll. Buy everything at once, as the brand advises, and hang on to the labels until the last length is up.
