Drawing the stencil…

A shaved skull with cut-out features

This skull is shaved, not cut out: the whole skull is gray on the stencil, so you peel off the skin and a thin layer of flesh, and it glows a warm orange with the eye sockets, nose and tooth gaps shining bright through it. Switch the preview to Lit pumpkin to see the effect before you print.

At the default medium size the skull prints about 5.5 × 6 inches on one page. The summary counts eight holes and no bridges.

Order of work

  1. Poke the outline of the skull and every hole through the paper.
  2. Cut the eye sockets and the nose first, then the five slots between the teeth. Cut them while the skin around them is still on: a shaved wall is thinner and cracks more easily.
  3. Score the outline of the skull, including the jaw, and shave inward.
  4. Scrape the inside wall behind the skull as thin as you safely can. The thinner it is, the brighter the shaved skull glows.

If a tooth breaks

The teeth between the slots are strips of shaved pumpkin, held at the top and bottom. If one snaps, pin it back with half a toothpick pushed in from the side. Wider teeth are stronger, so for a soft pumpkin pick a bigger stencil size instead of the smallest one.
