Drawing the stencil…

The scary stencils

  • Angry face: slanted eyes and a zigzag grin. Four holes, no bridges, and a good first scary carving.
  • Vampire fangs: angled eyes under shaved brows, and a wide mouth with two long fangs hanging from the upper lip and two small teeth at the bottom.
  • Stitched grin: ring eyes and a thin grin crossed by five stitches. The ring middles get bridges; switch Pieces that would fall out to Mark them in red to see them.
  • Skull: a shaved skull with cut-out eye sockets, nose and tooth gaps. It needs 3 tones, so keep 3 tones selected.
  • Spider and web: a web of shaved threads in the corner and a cut-out spider hanging from a shaved line. The legs are thin, so print it at the large or extra-large size.

Making scary faces look scary

Light makes the face. A carved grin looks sharpest with a bright LED puck placed low in the pumpkin, so the light rakes up through the mouth. Shaved areas like the skull and the brows only show with a thin wall: scrape the inside behind them before you start.

Thin points such as fangs and the tips of jagged teeth break easily. Carve the openings around them with short strokes, and don’t lever the knife against them. If one breaks, pin it back with a toothpick.
