The seven animals
The picker opens on the Animals filter, so only these designs show. The owl is open first; tap any other to switch.
- Bat: wings spread wide, one cut.
- Sitting cat: a black cat with a curled tail, one cut.
- Cat face: pointed ears, almond eyes with slit pupils and long whiskers.
- Cat and moon: the sitting cat cut out in front of a shaved full moon, plus two stars.
- Owl on a branch: a shaved body, big cut eyes with pupils, a beak and feather marks.
- Dog face: floppy ears, eyes with shines, a shaved muzzle and brows.
- Spider and web: a spider hanging on its thread beside a web in the corner. Its eight legs are fine lines, which suit Large or Extra large.
Match the animal to the pumpkin
Look at the shape of your pumpkin before you pick. At the default Medium size (6 inches on the longest side) the bat comes out 6 inches across and 3.3 high, the owl 5.3 across and 6 high, and the sitting cat 4.7 across and 6 high. Tall designs sit well on a narrow pumpkin; the wide bat and the dog face need a broad, flat face.
Designs with gray areas (owl body, dog muzzle, full moon, web threads) are shaved rather than cut, and only glow if the wall behind them is thin. Scrape the inside down before you start, and keep 3 tones selected, or those parts disappear from the stencil.
A set for the porch
Animals look good as a group. Carve the owl and the cat and moon on the two biggest pumpkins, and bats on the small ones around them. Or hand out animals by difficulty: the bat and the sitting cat for a first carving, the owl or the dog once you have shaved before, and the spider for whoever has the steadiest hand.
