The owl design
The owl sits on a branch, round and upright, with two ear tufts. Its body is gray (shaved), so it glows a soft orange. Two big black eyes are cut through, each with a white pupil left standing, looking slightly inward. A small triangle beak, a curved line down each wing and three chevrons on the chest are cut too, and the branch runs across the bottom as one long cut. The owl was drawn for this site.
At the default medium size it prints about 5.3 × 6 inches on one page. The summary counts nine holes and two bridges.
Order of work
- Poke every outline: the body and tufts, the eyes and pupils, both edges of each bridge, the beak, the feather marks and the branch.
- Cut the eyes first, each in two parts on either side of its bridge, leaving the pupil standing.
- Cut the beak, the wing lines and the chest chevrons. The chevrons are narrow V shapes: cut each arm separately and meet at the point.
- Cut the branch along the bottom.
- Score the outline of the body and shave inward, around the cut-outs. Thin the inside wall behind the body so the glow shows.
Tips
The eyes make the owl, so give them the most care. If a pupil comes loose, pin it back with a toothpick. For a softer pumpkin, choose Wide bridges before you print. On a tall pumpkin the owl fits well because it is taller than it is wide; on a short, round one, turn it to its flattest face.
