One cut, one bat
The bat is a single black silhouette: two scalloped wings, pointed ears and a small body, all joined. You cut it out in one piece, so the summary under the preview counts one hole and no bridges. That makes it the quickest design in the picker, and a good one for a first carving or for an evening with several pumpkins.
Only black is used, so 2 tones and 3 tones give the same stencil. In the Lit pumpkin view the whole bat glows yellow against the pumpkin.
Carving it cleanly
- Tape the stencil on the widest, flattest side and poke the outline every eighth of an inch or so. Poke every scallop of the wings: they are what make it read as a bat.
- Start in the middle of the body and saw out toward each wing, so the heavy part of the cut-out comes loose last.
- Finish the ears and the wing tips with short strokes. Push the cut-out piece in from the front instead of pulling it out.
Ideas
A single large bat centered on a big pumpkin looks bold from the street. Small bats in a row on pie pumpkins make a set for steps or a windowsill. For a night-sky set, carve the bat at Small size next to the moon and stars crescent. If you want a full moon, the cat and moon and the witch on a broom designs each have a shaved one.
