The puppy face

Two long black ears hang down each side, cut right through, so they glow like a pair of floppy ears. Two round eyes are cut too, each with a small white shine left in it. The nose, the mouth and the tongue are one joined cut in the middle of a gray muzzle, and two gray brows sit above the eyes; both are shaved, so they glow softly. The face was drawn for this site.

The summary under the preview counts five holes and two bridges, the bridges holding the eye shines. At the default medium size it prints about 6 × 4.8 inches.

Order of work

  1. Poke the outlines, including both edges of each bridge.
  2. Cut the ears: they are big, simple shapes and a good warm-up.
  3. Cut the eyes in two parts on either side of the bridge, leaving the shine in place.
  4. Cut the nose, mouth and tongue as one piece, starting at the nose.
  5. Shave the muzzle and the brows last.

A stencil of your own dog

The Photo tab turns a photo into a stencil in your browser, with bridges added the same way. Pick a photo where the face fills most of the frame and one side is lit more than the other. Move Threshold until the eyes, nose and mouth read clearly, and raise Smoothing or Remove specks if fur turns into lots of little holes. Then compare the result with this design and carve whichever you like better. For a cat, see the cat stencils.
