Eclipse 2027 in the UK: How Much of the Sun and When

The UK sees a partial eclipse on the morning of 2 August 2027. Find the exact times and the share of the Sun covered in your town.

Protect your eyes. Looking at the Sun during any partial phase, even when 99% of it is covered, can permanently damage your eyes. Use eclipse glasses or a handheld viewer that meets ISO 12312‑2, or project the Sun’s image. Only during totality, and only inside the path of totality, is it safe to look without them. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need their own solar filter on the front; never look through them while wearing only eclipse glasses.

Totality begins about 1635 km to the south. On the centre line, 1755 km away, it lasts 5 min 7 s.

The Sun is never completely covered here, so there is no moment when it is safe to look at it without eclipse glasses or a solar viewer, not even at 41.8%.

Calculated in your browser from NASA’s Besselian elements for this eclipse (F. Espenak, NASA/GSFC), with ΔT = 69.35 s from IERS Bulletin A of 24 September 2026. Contact times are for sea level unless you enter a height, and the Moon’s uneven edge can shift them by a second or two. London: 51.5085, -0.1257.

The UK is well north of the path of totality, so on Monday 2 August 2027 it sees a partial eclipse: the Moon takes a bite out of the Sun between about 09:00 and 11:00 BST. The further south-west you are, the bigger the bite: Plymouth sees nearly half the Sun covered, Aberdeen less than a quarter. The page opens on London; pick your city above or search for any town.

Watching a partial eclipse

At maximum the Sun is about 35° to 41° high in the east to south-east, clear of most rooftops. The eclipse is only visible through a proper filter or as a projection: a pinhole in card, or the gaps between leaves, throws small crescent images of the Sun onto the ground around the maximum. Photos taken with a phone without a solar filter show only glare.

Going to see totality

The nearest totality is in the far south of Spain and in Gibraltar, where it lasts up to about 4 min 50 s in the late morning. Enter a place there, or open the Spain page, to see how the same morning looks from inside the path, and compare how many minutes you gain by going.

Times here are British Summer Time (UTC+1).
