Eclipse 2027 in Tunisia: Sfax, Djerba and the Coast

Totality crosses central and southern Tunisia on the morning of 2 August 2027. Check the exact times and duration for your town or resort.

Protect your eyes. Looking at the Sun during any partial phase, even when 99% of it is covered, can permanently damage your eyes. Use eclipse glasses or a handheld viewer that meets ISO 12312‑2, or project the Sun’s image. Only during totality, and only inside the path of totality, is it safe to look without them. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need their own solar filter on the front; never look through them while wearing only eclipse glasses.

The centre line of the path is about 20 km to the south, where totality lasts 5 min 44 s.

Keep eclipse glasses on for the whole partial phase. Only between 10:08:49 and 10:14:28, when the Sun is completely covered, can you look without them. Put them back on at the first flash of sunlight.

Calculated in your browser from NASA’s Besselian elements for this eclipse (F. Espenak, NASA/GSFC), with ΔT = 69.35 s from IERS Bulletin A of 24 September 2026. Contact times are for sea level unless you enter a height, and the Moon’s uneven edge can shift them by a second or two. Sfax: 34.7406, 10.7603.

In Tunisia the Moon’s shadow enters from Algeria over Tozeur and the salt lakes, passes Sidi Bouzid, Kairouan and Sfax, and leaves over the Gulf of Gabès and Djerba, all in the middle of the morning of Monday 2 August 2027. The page opens on Sfax; tap a resort or town above, or enter the coordinates of your hotel.

The Sahel resorts are on the edge

Many visitors stay between Hammamet and Mahdia, and that is where the northern edge of the path runs. Mahdia is inside with nearly three minutes, Monastir and Sousse are just outside, and Hammamet and Tunis see a deep partial eclipse that never becomes total. From the Sousse–Monastir area, a short trip south, to Mahdia, El Jem (4 min 23 s) or Sfax, is the difference between 99.9% and several minutes of totality. At 99.9% it is still daylight and the corona stays hidden.

When and where to look

Times on this page are in Central European Time (UTC+1), which Tunisia keeps all year. During totality the Sun is about 55° to 57° high in the east to south-east, so a hotel balcony or beach facing east works. Glasses stay on for the whole partial phase and come off only between the second and third contact times shown for your place.
