Eclipse 2027 in Egypt: Luxor, the Nile Valley and the Red Sea

The longest totality of the 2027 eclipse falls on the Nile valley around Luxor. Check the times and duration for your hotel, temple or boat.

Protect your eyes. Looking at the Sun during any partial phase, even when 99% of it is covered, can permanently damage your eyes. Use eclipse glasses or a handheld viewer that meets ISO 12312‑2, or project the Sun’s image. Only during totality, and only inside the path of totality, is it safe to look without them. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need their own solar filter on the front; never look through them while wearing only eclipse glasses.

The centre line of the path is about 15 km to the north-east, where totality lasts 6 min 23 s.

Keep eclipse glasses on for the whole partial phase. Only between 13:02:06 and 13:08:27, when the Sun is completely covered, can you look without them. Put them back on at the first flash of sunlight.

Calculated in your browser from NASA’s Besselian elements for this eclipse (F. Espenak, NASA/GSFC), with ΔT = 69.35 s from IERS Bulletin A of 24 September 2026. Contact times are for sea level unless you enter a height, and the Moon’s uneven edge can shift them by a second or two. Luxor: 25.6989, 32.6421.

In Egypt the eclipse happens around midday on Monday 2 August 2027, with the Sun high in the sky. The Moon’s shadow crosses the Western Desert, reaches the Nile valley near Asyut, runs down the valley past Sohag, Qena and Luxor, and leaves over the Red Sea near Marsa Alam. The page opens on Luxor; tap a temple or town above, or enter the coordinates of your hotel or Nile boat mooring.

Reading the times

Times here are in Egyptian summer time (EEST, UTC+3), which Egypt has used again each summer since 2023. The simulator fixes the zone for 2 August 2027 when the site is built, so a phone with outdated time zone data can’t move them by an hour.

The edge near Aswan

South of Luxor the path narrows towards its southern edge. Esna gets 5 min 46 s and Edfu 5 min 32 s, but Kom Ombo only 3 min 41 s and Daraw about 3 min, and Aswan itself stays just outside. If you are based in Aswan, the short drive north towards Kom Ombo or Edfu turns a 99.8% partial eclipse into minutes of totality.

Safety in the midday Sun

Glasses on for the whole partial phase, off only between the times shown for second and third contact. The Sun is so high that people tend to look up for long stretches: keep the filter on the whole time except during totality, and use the simulation’s jump buttons beforehand so you know when the diamond ring ends it.

Places in Egypt that see totality

Every listed town in Egypt inside the path, longest totality first. Totality times are to the second; the partial phase to the minute.
