Eclipse 2027 in Gibraltar: Totality Time, Duration and Viewpoints

All of Gibraltar is inside the path of totality on 2 August 2027. Check the exact times for the town, Europa Point and the towns across the bay.

Protect your eyes. Looking at the Sun during any partial phase, even when 99% of it is covered, can permanently damage your eyes. Use eclipse glasses or a handheld viewer that meets ISO 12312‑2, or project the Sun’s image. Only during totality, and only inside the path of totality, is it safe to look without them. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need their own solar filter on the front; never look through them while wearing only eclipse glasses.

The centre line of the path is about 50 km to the south, where totality lasts 4 min 53 s.

Keep eclipse glasses on for the whole partial phase. Only between 10:45:34 and 10:50:01, when the Sun is completely covered, can you look without them. Put them back on at the first flash of sunlight.

Calculated in your browser from NASA’s Besselian elements for this eclipse (F. Espenak, NASA/GSFC), with ΔT = 69.35 s from IERS Bulletin A of 24 September 2026. Contact times are for sea level unless you enter a height, and the Moon’s uneven edge can shift them by a second or two.

Gibraltar lies wholly inside the path of totality of 2 August 2027, about 50 km north of its centre line. The partial eclipse starts at 09:41 Central European Summer Time, the Sun is completely covered from 10:45:34 to 10:50:01 in the town, and the Moon leaves the Sun at 12:01. The page opens on Gibraltar; press the jump buttons under the simulation to see the diamond ring just before 10:45:34 and the Sun’s return at 10:50:01.

Within the Rock

Totality is almost the same everywhere on the peninsula, because it is only 5 km long. The southern tip gains a few seconds: about 4 min 31 s at Europa Point against 4 min 27 s in the town and at Catalan Bay. Height makes little difference to the times; near the top of the Rock, at about 420 m, totality lasts about 4 min 29 s. To check a particular spot, open Enter coordinates and type its latitude, longitude and height.

Across the bay and the Strait

The Spanish towns around the bay are also in the path, with similar times: Algeciras about 4 min 28 s, La Línea about 4 min 24 s. The longest totality near Gibraltar is on the African shore, in Ceuta and around Tetouan, closer to the centre line. The table below compares them.

Eye safety is the same here as anywhere: eclipse glasses that meet ISO 12312-2 for every partial phase, off only between the second and third contact times shown above.
