How the starter nursery is laid out
This baby room measures 10 × 11 ft under an 8 ft ceiling. On the plan, light comes in through a window in the top wall, you enter from the bottom, and nothing stands on the window wall:
- Crib on the left wall, its long side against the wall and just under 3 ft down from the window wall.
- Glider in the bottom left corner, just below the crib and facing into the room.
- Changing table on the right wall, across the rug from the crib, with the dresser next to it towards the door.
- A round rug in the middle, so the floor between the crib and the changing table stays clear to walk across.
Plan it around safe sleep
The federal crib standard fixes the inside of a full-size crib at 28 × 52⅜ in; the outside depends on the model’s rails and end panels. The starter crib is the Graco Benton 5-in-1 at 29.72 × 56.73 in, so measure the one you pick. What changes between rooms is where it goes. The CPSC asks for cribs to stand away from windows and blind or curtain cords, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep guide keeps pillows, quilts, bumpers and toys out of the crib, so plan shelves and toy storage elsewhere in the room, not beside the crib rails. The AAP also recommends room-sharing for at least the first 6 months, so plan a sleep space in the bedroom planner too.
Make it yours
Measure your room and type it in Room, then set each piece to the product you’re considering: cribs, gliders and changing tables vary a lot. Select the glider in Top view to see how much room is left to rock and stand up, and check that the door still swings freely past the dresser. Anchor It! asks for dressers and shelves to be fixed to the wall, so give them a wall with studs, not a window or a closet door. Save the floor plan from the ⋯ menu and take it shopping.
