How to plan a home office
Start with the desk, because you’ll spend hours at it. Type the room’s size, place the door and window, then put the desk where you get daylight from the side. The starter does that: the desk is on the top wall of a 3 × 3.4 m room and the window is on the left, with a bookcase on the right wall and a reading chair and lamp in the corner by the window.
Then check the space around the chair. Pick the office chair, then look at it from above in Top view: the numbers around it give its distance to the desk, the walls and anything behind it, which is the room you have to push back and stand up. OSHA’s computer workstation guide gives a preferred screen distance of 20 to 40 in (50 to 100 cm) from your eyes, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level; the starter’s screen is about 75 cm from the centre of the seat.
Make it your workspace
- Your desk: measure it, or copy the size from the listing, then select the desk and type it into its details panel. A corner desk can be made from two desks, one turned 90°.
- Storage: the wall shelf starts 1.5 m up, above the monitor. Raise or lower it with Off floor, or add a second bookcase.
- Video calls: turn the 3D view to where your webcam will be and see what’s behind you.
