How to plan a bedroom
Start with the bed: it decides everything else. Measure your room wall to wall, open the Room panel and type the width and length (the starter is 12 × 13 ft with an 8 ft ceiling). Then select the queen bed and look at the gaps in Top view. You’ll want enough room to walk around both sides and the foot of the bed, to open the wardrobe doors fully, and to pull out the dresser drawers while standing in front of them.
To compare bed sizes, add a twin, full or king from For this room, drag it over the queen, and delete the one you don’t want. The mattress sizes come from Casper’s size guide: twin 38 × 75 in, twin XL 38 × 80 in, full 53 × 75 in, queen 60 × 80 in and king 76 × 80 in. Casper suggests a room of at least 10 × 10 ft for a queen (10 × 12 ft is more comfortable) and at least 12 × 12 ft for a king.
Common bedroom layouts
- Headboard on a wall without a door: the bed stays out of the way in and both sides stay reachable. The starter uses it: the headboard is on the top wall, and the door is on the left wall by the dresser.
- Bed under the window: frees a long wall for a wardrobe or desk, but check the window sill height against the headboard.
- Bed in a corner: gives a small room the most floor, at the cost of one side of the bed. It works well for a twin or a child’s room.
When one layout works, save or print its floor plan from the ⋯ menu, then try another: undo brings you back, and the page keeps your last room.
