How to plan a dorm room
A shared room has to fit two of everything, so the question is where each person’s half goes. Find your room’s size (many housing offices list it for each hall) and enter the width and length under Room. The starter is an 11 × 14 ft double: the beds along the side walls with their heads on the window wall, a mini fridge under the window between them, a dresser at the foot of each bed and the two desks by the door.
The beds are twin XL, 38 × 80 in, the size Casper calls the default in college dorm rooms across the US. If your hall uses regular twins, swap them from For this room.
Layouts to try
- Mirror image: the starter. Each roommate gets one side, and the middle stays open.
- Beds in an L: push both beds into one corner, head to head at right angles. It frees a whole wall for desks, or for a small sofa or a rug and floor cushions.
- Lofted beds: raise a bed with Off floor and slide the desk or dresser underneath. Check the ceiling height (8 ft in the starter) leaves room to sit up.
Once you agree on a layout, Share result sends it to your roommate, and Print floor plan in the ⋯ menu gives you a sheet to take on move-in day.
