How to plan a living room
Decide what the room is for first: watching TV, talking, reading or all three. That fixes the focal point, and the seating turns towards it. The starter shows one answer: a TV on a low stand on one wall, the sofa facing it, and two armchairs across from each other so the group feels like a circle around the coffee table.
Measure the room and type it in the Room panel, then put the doors and windows where they really are: they decide where people walk. Drag the sofa and chairs until the main path from the door to the rest of the house doesn’t cut through the seating. In Top view, select a piece to see its distance to the nearest wall or piece on each side, and leave at least 36 in (about 90 cm) for the main walkway; that’s the walkway width the NKBA’s kitchen planning guidelines recommend, and a fair yardstick for a living room too.
Things to check before you buy
- The sofa’s real size. Sofas that look alike online can differ a lot in width and depth. Measure the one you want and enter its size in the sofa’s details panel, then see whether the side tables still fit.
- The coffee table’s reach. It should be close enough to put a cup down from the sofa. In the starter it sits 40 cm in front of the seat.
- The TV and the window. Turn the 3D view to the sofa’s point of view and see where the windows sit relative to the screen.
