How the starter laundry room is laid out
An 8 × 10 ft room, 8 ft high, entered through a door in the bottom wall. On the plan:
- Top wall: from the left, the dryer, the washer (about an inch apart, each topped by a wall cabinet) and the utility sink right beside the washer.
- Left wall: two base cabinets with a worktop, about 4 ft of counter for folding, starting 31 in out from the front of the dryer.
- Right wall: a 36 in shelving unit for detergent, baskets and bins, clear of the door’s swing.
Sizes and clearances behind it
The machines are the 28 × 32 in footprint GE gives for its GFW550 washer and GFD55 dryer, 39¾ in tall. With its door open the washer is 54½ in deep, and the starter leaves at least 30 in of empty floor in front of both machines. For an accessible laundry the 2010 ADA Standards (sections 305 and 611) go further: a 30 × 48 in clear floor space centred on each machine for a side-on approach, which a machine tucked into a corner can’t get. The same GE guide wants the drain standpipe between 24 and 96 in above the floor and at least 1¼ in across, or the drain hose placed in a laundry tub, which is why the sink sits next to the washer.
Fit it to your room
Type your room’s size under Room, then move the door to where yours is. Laundry sits against walls, so the machines, sink and cabinets snap flush when you drag them near one. Pick a machine, then use Top view: its dimension lines show the floor that is free ahead of it. Mark where your dryer vent and water hookups are before moving the machines, and check the plan against your model’s installation guide and your local code.
