Stars by shape

• Five-pointed: ★ ☆ for ratings, ✩ with a stressed outline, ✪ inside a circle, ✫ ✬ ✭ ✮ with open or outlined centres, ✯ as a pinwheel and ✰ with a drop shadow.
• Four-pointed sparkles: ✦ and ✧ look like a glint of light and mix well with ⋆ (Star Operator), a small star that sits at mid-height.
• Many points: ✶ has six, ✴ ✷ ✸ have eight, ✹ has twelve and ✺ is a sixteen-pointed asterisk.
• Asterisks: ✱ ✲ ✢ ✣ ✤ ✥ ❉ ❊ ❋, and ⁂ (the asterism, three asterisks in a triangle), for bullets and section breaks.
• Emoji stars: ⭐ Star, 🌟 Glowing star, ✨ Sparkles and 💫 Dizzy.

What the star names describe

The long names in the table below read like a recipe for each drawing. “Open centre” means the middle is hollow, and “teardrop-spoked”, “balloon-spoked” and “club-spoked” describe the shape of each arm. So ❊ Eight Teardrop-Spoked Propeller Asterisk has eight teardrop arms bent like a propeller. Searching by one of those words, such as teardrop, finds the whole family.

Newer stars

Almost every star here was in Unicode 1.1. The exceptions are ⁎ Low Asterisk and ⁑ Two Asterisks Aligned Vertically (3.2), ⚝ Outlined White Star and ⭐ (5.1), and the emoji 🌟 ✨ 💫 (6.0).
