Heart Symbols to Copy and Paste

Two families of hearts

• Text hearts ♥ ♡ ❥ ❣ ❦ ❧ ☙ are drawn like letters, in the same colour as the sentence around them. ♥ and ♡ come from the card suits (they also sit in the Cards, chess & dice group). ❥ is a heart turned on its side as a bullet and ❣ is a heart used as an exclamation mark. ❦ ❧ ☙ are fleurons, heart-shaped leaves: Unicode’s notes give ❦ the name Aldus leaf and ❧ the name hedera (ivy leaf), and call ☙ a binding signature mark.
• Emoji hearts come in colours: ❤️ red, 🧡 orange, 💛 yellow, 💚 green, 💙 blue, 💜 purple, 🖤 black, 🤍 white and 🤎 brown, plus the pink family 💕 💞 💓 💗 💖 💘 💝 and the broken heart 💔.

When each heart arrived

The table below lists the Unicode version for every heart. All the text hearts except ☙ (Unicode 3.0) date from the first release the database lists, 1.1. Most emoji hearts came with Unicode 6.0 in 2010. The newer colours followed later: 🖤 in 9.0, 🧡 in 10.0 (2017), and 🤍 and 🤎 in 12.0. On a phone that hasn’t had a system update for several years, those last four are the ones most likely to show as a box.

Hearts in code

In HTML, only ♥ has a named reference, ♥. The others are written with their decimal number, such as ♡ for ♡ or 💜 for 💜. In a spreadsheet, a heart pasted into a cell is an ordinary character, so a rating column of ♥♥♥♡♡ can be counted with a text function. For faces with hearts, like (｡♥‿♥｡), see the love kaomoji.

Hearts: the 29 symbols and their codes

Names and code points from the Unicode Character Database, HTML codes from the HTML standard, and the Unicode version that first included each character. Where a symbol has a different, shorter name in Unicode’s emoji list, that name follows in brackets.
