The alphabet in order

Greek has 24 letters, and the grid above follows the alphabet with each capital next to its small letter: Α α alpha, Β β beta, Γ γ gamma, Δ δ delta, Ε ε epsilon, Ζ ζ zeta, Η η eta, Θ θ theta, Ι ι iota, Κ κ kappa, Λ λ lambda, Μ μ mu, Ν ν nu, Ξ ξ xi, Ο ο omicron, Π π pi, Ρ ρ rho, Σ σ sigma, Τ τ tau, Υ υ upsilon, Φ φ phi, Χ χ chi, Ψ ψ psi and Ω ω omega. The small final sigma ς sits right after σ.

The table under the grid gives every letter’s official Unicode name, its code point and its HTML entity. The entities are simply the English names, so α gives α and Ω gives Ω, which is handy when you write HTML or Markdown by hand.

Symbol forms for math and physics

The last four tiles are alternative shapes that Unicode encodes separately for use in formulas: ϑ (theta symbol), ϕ (phi symbol), ϖ (pi symbol) and ϵ (lunate epsilon). Textbooks use them as different variables from θ, φ, π and ε, so pick the shape your source uses. In ordinary Greek words, always use the plain letters.

Letters that hide among other symbols

Some characters look exactly like Greek letters but are not. ∆ (INCREMENT) and ∑ (N-ARY SUMMATION) in the math group are operators, while Δ and Σ here are letters. µ (MICRO SIGN) on many keyboards is a different character from μ (GREEK SMALL LETTER MU). And the Latin capitals A, B, E, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, T, X, Y and Z look the same as Greek Α, Β, Ε, Η, Ι, Κ, Μ, Ν, Ο, Ρ, Τ, Χ, Υ and Ζ. A search for one won’t find the other, so copy the letter from this page when it has to be Greek: in a Greek word, a sorority name, a variable or a unit.
