Choosing a tick or a cross

The check marks here fall into three styles:

• Plain text marks ✓ ✔ ✗ ✘ ✕ ✖ are drawn in whatever colour the surrounding text uses, so they look at home in documents, spreadsheets and forms. Pair them by weight: ✓ with ✗, ✔ with ✘.
• Boxes ☐ ☑ ☒ and ⊠ make instant to-do lists and survey answers. Their names in the table below are the official ones: Ballot Box, Ballot Box with Check, Ballot Box with X.
• Emoji ✅ ❌ ❎ and the emoji-style ✔️ are always coloured and read as a strong “yes” or “no” in chat.

Plain or emoji?

Of the bare ticks, only ✔ Heavy Check Mark has an emoji form in Unicode’s emoji list (the boxed ☑ has one too), so it is the one that may turn into a coloured picture on a phone. That is why this page has two ✔ tiles: the plain one, and one that explicitly asks for emoji style. ✓ Check Mark has no emoji form at all, which makes it the most predictable tick. Among the crosses, ❌ Cross mark and ❎ Cross mark button are emoji only, while ✗ and ✘ never are.

Using check marks in documents and code

• Web pages: write ✓ for ✓ and ✗ for ✗, or use the number shown for any other mark, such as ☑ for ☑.
• Word: 2713 then Alt+X gives ✓, and 2717 then Alt+X gives ✗.
• Spreadsheets: paste the mark into a cell. It is a character, so functions like COUNTIF can count ✓ cells.

The newest marks are the light check mark 🗸 and the light-X ballot box ⮽, both from Unicode 7.0. For a big “DONE” spelled out in letters, try the big letters maker.
