Picking an arrow

Arrows in Unicode come from several blocks, each with its own style. Tap one and the strip names it, so you can tell look-alikes apart:

  • Simple arrows ← ↑ → ↓ ↔ ↕ and the diagonals ↖ ↗ ↘ ↙ are thin and neutral, for directions and “A → B” notes. They have short HTML names: ←, ↑, →, ↓, ↔.
  • Double arrows ⇐ ⇒ ⇔ are drawn with two shafts; ⇒ and ⇔ have the HTML names ⇒ and ⇔.
  • Turning arrows ↩ ↪ ⤴ ⤵ show a return or a change of direction; ↯ is a downwards zigzag arrow.
  • Heavy and 3D arrows ➔ ➜ ➤ ➢ ➳ are dingbats: bold, decorative, good for calls to action or bullet points.
  • Triangles ▶ ▼ ◀ ▲ and the small ▸ ▾ work as pointers, play buttons and expandable-list markers.

Sixteen arrows with an emoji twin

Unicode’s emoji list gives these arrows an emoji form: ↩ ↪ ⤴ ⤵ ↔ ↕ ↖ ↗ ↘ ↙ ⬅ ⬆ ⬇ ➡ ▶ ◀. When an app chooses that form, the arrow appears as a small coloured picture instead of a line in the text colour. It is still the same character underneath. The thin arrows ← → ↑ ↓ and the dingbat ➜ have no emoji form, so they keep a plain look everywhere.

Arrows built from several characters

Some arrows are easier to type than to find: ->, => and <--> work in any plain-text setting, and longer ones like >>-----> are in the one-line art on the text art page. Some programming fonts draw those two-character arrows joined up, but they are still separate characters when copied.

Arrows: the 80 symbols and their codes

Names and code points from the Unicode Character Database, HTML codes from the HTML standard, and the Unicode version that first included each character. Where a symbol has a different, shorter name in Unicode’s emoji list, that name follows in brackets.
