A round robin is the fairest chess format for a small field: every player meets every other once, and the Berger tables give each player as close to equal numbers of Whites and Blacks as the count allows. This page opens with eight players, seven rounds and four boards, scored 1, ½ and 0.

Pairing numbers and colours

The order of the list is the pairing number: the first line is player 1, the second player 2 and so on. Draw the numbers by lot before the first round (Shuffle order does it for you) and the tables do the rest. In each game the left-hand player has White, marked W, and with an even field board 1 is always the game of the highest pairing number. With eight players, everyone gets four Whites and three Blacks or the other way round. By player lists one player’s opponents, colours and results, which is what the players ask for between rounds.

Entering results

Each board has three buttons: 1–0 when White wins, ½–½ for a draw and 0–1 when Black wins. Press the same button again to clear it. The standings show games played, wins, draws, losses, Sonneborn-Berger (SB) and points, and say which tiebreak separated two players on the same score (ahead on direct encounter). Players level on every tiebreak share a place, shown as 1=.

Before the event

Print the schedule: each page holds a range of rounds with an empty result box per board, so the arbiter can pin it up and fill it in. FIDE’s Handbook (as of October 2026) recommends reversing the last two rounds of the first cycle in a double round robin; the Format switch does this. The Koya system, which some round robin rules use as a later tiebreak, isn’t calculated here.
