Choosing a cat face
- Classic whiskered:
(=^・ω・^=)and(=^‥^=)are the standard cat faces, calm and friendly. - Paws up:
ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅandฅ(^・ω・^ฅ)hold their paws in the air, for a playful “hi” or a pounce. - Moods:
(=`ω´=)is a grumpy cat,(=TェT=)is crying,(ↀДↀ)✧is wide-eyed and startled, and/ᐠ - ˕ -マis dozing off. - Whole cats:
ᓚᘏᗢlies on its side, and/ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\sits with pointed ears.
Where the parts come from
Cat kaomoji pull in characters from all over Unicode. The paw ฅ is Thai, the mouth ﻌ is an Arabic letter form, the eyes ↀ are an old Roman numeral for one thousand, and the lying cat uses Canadian Aboriginal syllabics. That mix is why a cat face can look slightly different in each app: each character comes from whatever font has it.
Mixing cats with other faces
Cats pair well with the other moods: put ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ after a greeting, (=TェT=) after bad news, or ᓚᘏᗢ at the end of a lazy Sunday message. To swap a cat’s mood by hand, keep the whiskers and ears and change only the middle: (=^・ω・^=) becomes surprised as (=^・o・^=).
