Ways to use a random NBA team
- NBA 2K rebuild challenges. Spin for the franchise you have to take over in MyNBA, then spin again for a trade partner. Set the wheel to hide each winner so a whole group can claim different teams from one wheel.
- Season bets and pick’em leagues. Give every friend a random team before tip-off and follow the standings together. With five people, spin six rounds and everyone ends up with six teams.
- Watch parties and bar games. Spin for which game goes on the big screen, or who has to wear which jersey.
How the league is organised
The NBA has 30 teams in two conferences of 15, and each conference has three divisions of five. The East holds the Atlantic, Central and Southeast divisions; the West holds the Northwest, Pacific and Southwest. The Toronto Raptors are the only team based outside the United States. New York City has two teams (the Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets), and so does the Los Angeles area: the Lakers, and the Clippers, who moved from the arena they shared with the Lakers to their own Intuit Dome in Inglewood in 2024. The newest franchise is Charlotte’s, which joined in 2004 as the Bobcats and has been the Hornets since 2014.
To spin one division or conference, keep only its five or fifteen lines in the entries box. For a bracket, open the Teams tab and split the league into six random groups of five.
Keeping it fair
Every team has the same slice, so each spin is a 1 in 30 draw no matter what came up before. A team landing twice in a row happens about once every 30 spins and isn’t a bug. When each team should come up once, choose Hide under Options: the wheel shrinks by one slice after every pick until the league is used up.
